Francis Bacon, Lying Figure

Leicester New Walk Museum - Francis Bacon, Lying Figure, 1959 Oil on canvas. I was very surprised to see this painting in a Leicester art gallery, The last time I had seen work by Francis Bacon was in the Tate Britain when I was at University. I have always been fascinated by Bacon’s work as it is something to be seen to be believed. The digital prints give a representation of his artwork but when faced with the paintings you can see the texture of the paint and the suggestion of brush strokes and motion. The figure shows movement and unrest, which looks to suggest that Francis Bacon would let the subject move freely when painting their portrait and capture a true lifelike representation of the subject and leave a motion stamp of their existence on the canvas.
